Careers FAQ

I am not Catholic, but I am a Christian and have a desire to teach in a Christian environment. Do you only hire Catholic teachers?

We seek Catholic candidates for our vacancies. However, whenever a suitable Catholic candidate cannot be found, we go beyond that scope. When it is necessary to do so, we always consider factors such as evidence of Christian faith, comfort level and desire to be in a Catholic environment.

My application package requires three letters from professional supervisors. Who should I request my letters of reference from?

Your professional supervisors are those who have observed your skills as a teacher. Some of your most effective references are: university facilitators who may have formally evaluated you, school administrators who have been present in your classroom, or partner/cooperating teachers.

What do you offer new teachers in your division?

Teaching with Lakeland Catholic School Division is being part of a family. We encourage a team approach with grade level team collaboration, formal mentorship programs, financial assistance in setting up classrooms, and extensive professional development. Our leadership team is committed to doing everything they can to provide small class sizes and a generous orientation in an effort to set up each and every new teacher for success. We have a number of Instructional Learning Coaches to support you with wrap-around services. The Instructional Coaching team provides New Teacher, Religious Education, Literacy, Numeracy, Educational Technology, CTS (Career and Technology Studies), CTF (Career and Technology Foundations), Dual Credit, Indigenous Education and English as a Second Language support.

What emphasis do you place on faith in your schools?

We exist because of our faith. It is of the utmost importance to us. We are committed to deepening our students' relationship with Christ. Our faith is evident in all that we do.

What if I miss the January 31 deadline? Should I still apply?

Absolutely! This is our timeframe to begin the shortlist and selection process. We accept application packages all year long.

What sort of faith development do you offer your teachers?

There is an ongoing faith-filled environment in each of our schools with liturgies, masses and celebrations. In addition, our annual "Faith Development Days" are awe-inspiring faith experiences for teachers and staff across our division to grow in their faith. The world-renowned speakers and sessions offered during Faith Development Days focus on personal faith growth. The Sharing the Faith program for new teachers will take place during your first two years at LCSD.

When was Lakeland Catholic School Division formed?

Lakeland Catholic School Division has been serving the needs of Catholic students for over sixty years. It is comprised of eight schools, serving over 2,500 students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 across Northeastern Alberta. We serve the communities of Bonnyville, Cold Lake, Lac La Biche and Waskatenau. Our school in Lac La Biche, Light of Christ Catholic School is the latest addition to the Lakeland Catholic family, opening in the 2016-2017 school year.

Why do you hire so many teachers relative to your size?

Since our formation, every school year has been a year of growth.  In addition, our young teaching staff lends itself to a high number of maternity leaves every year.  Many temporary contracts issued for staff maternity leaves are one full year.

Your deadline for application packages is the end of January. If I am not in a position to forward a complete package by that date, should I send what I have now or wait until I can submit a complete application package?

The best application package is the one which is complete; however, at the end of January most graduating teachers will not have all of the required documentation. We suggest you begin your online profile before February 15 and then upload documents as they are made available to you.
